The mode of suicide in Paris is essentially poisoning, then hanging and jumping from high place.

From a newspaper:

PARIS, May 4. -- An attempt has been made here to invest the suicide of Charles T. Steedman of New York, who shot himself in the Hotel de L'Orient in the Rue Daunou, with a sensational mystery which it does not possess.
